My website is on the fritz this weekend, so I’ve been tinkering around with it a little. Sometimes I hate new technology because it makes me feel so stupid. After all, I don’t have to know how my car works to be a good driver. I just take it to someone, hand over cash, and voila!

Unfortunately, the designer who created the look and feel of my blog has moved on to other things, so I’m driving around on this thing by myself. When I try to decipher the code she wrote in the cascading style sheets it reminds me of that warning label on the back of a complicated device — “No user-serviceable parts”.

The fact is, there are a lot of things in life where I have a little bit of knowledge, but still need help. I had to have a neighbor help me hang some new blinds this weekend, for example. I had all the tools, but just not the “knack.” It was the same thing when I first started going to the gym years ago, I sort of knew what to do, but it wasn’t until I hired a trainer that I got truly squared away.

I don’t know if this is a guy-thing, but for me, asking for help isn’t easy. Maybe it’s just the aforementioned desire not to look stupid. But when I think about my blog post from yesterday and when I think about my own maintenance journey, it seems to me that going it alone is no picnic. So really, I had better get used to acknowledging when I need a hand.

After all, maintaining my weight is a lot more work than hanging blinds, learning HTML, and doing an oil change.
